Last year, the general assembly set aside monies for 1 high school agriculture department in each county to establish an apiary on campus.
An apiary is a place where beehives are kept.
Mr. Justice and Mrs. Smith completed the application, and was chosen to receive a $1,500 grant to establish our hives! We have been hard at work with the Haywood County Beekeepers Association to prepare for our bees, and during spring break, we received 2 packages of bees donated by beekeepers in the county. We added a third hive this week! Back in March, 4 students – Blaine Henson, Addison Passmore, Sophia Hendricks, and Matthew Warren, along with Mrs. Smith attended an 8-hour bee school on a Saturday to learn about all aspects of beekeeping!
We hope to be able to harvest and sell honey from our bees as well as to make lip balms and other beeswax products!
